FOOTBALL: Warriors must refocus against Stoughton

It's not over yet. That's what the Foxboro High football team is telling itself after last Friday's tough loss at Franklin. That the Hockomock League is too deep, too talented, for one loss to end a season.

"We're telling them what everybody has felt," Foxboro coach Jack Martinelli said. "I don't think anybody is going to go wire-to-wire in this league, there are still so many matchups that can determine this season."

The best the Warriors can do is win out the rest of the season and hope for the best. And that starts on Friday night, when Foxboro travels to Stoughton looking to avenge a loss from last year.

"I think they're a lot better team than their record indicates," Martinelli said of the 0-5 Black Knights. "They run at you and they have a pretty athletic quarterback."

Stoughton has already lost to North Attleboro and Mansfield along with a non-league loss to future league foe Attleboro.

On defense, the Black Knights typically run a four-man front but will most likely throw a five-man line against Foxboro's talented rushing attack. But that could work to Stoughton's disadvantage, as sophomore quarterback Nick Sestito showed against Franklin that the Warriors are more than capable of throwing the ball.

"I think one of the bright spots last week was Sestito's ability to throw the ball down field, which I thought he did pretty well," Martinelli said. "I guess we're going to have to take what people give us."

Against Franklin last week, the Warriors allowed 27 first-half points and were never really a threat to win the game, thanks in large part to a number of mistakes.

"I kind of looked at the game as the score wasn't indicative of the way the game actually was playing out mathematically," Martinelli said. "If we had finished off a couple of series, even though I didn't think we were emotionally involved as much as we were before, we could have been on the scoreboard."

But despite the poor result, Martinelli and his staff still took some positives away from the game.

"I thought Eddie Noonan had a good game for us, I thought (James) Saunders ran the ball pretty well," Martinelli said. "I think a lot of kids did good things, we just didn't finish things off as a group."

So the Warriors are coming out against Stoughton with something to prove. That they are more the team that beat North Attleboro and less the team that fell to Franklin.

"It doesn't matter who we're playing this week, we have to prove something to ourselves," Martinelli said.

The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at Stoughton High School.
